Thinking about Greece

I've been to Greece a number of times, beginning in 2006. Over the years I have learned to love the country and its people. And yet it means something more. For the last 44 years, I have worked as a cultural anthropologist, mostly in southern India, in the Telugu-speaking region of Andhra Pradesh. India is place of ancient traditions, and people have a lot to say about them. It is also a warm and hospitable place, albeit a big disorganized and chaotic. There is always something to find fascinating. And so, when I first went to Greece, I discovered something similar; indeed, Greece represents the best of both worlds, West and East. Finally, I enjoy teaching my students about Greece. Every other semester I offer a course on Thucydides and Aristotle, not just as historical curiosities, but as landmarks in the development of Western thought. Would it be too fanciful to suggest that our cohousing project represents a kind of 21st century attempt to recapture the ethos of the ancient Greek 'demos.' More on that later Charles
